Charcoal toothpaste is just about everywhere you look lately.
However, we do not recommend the use of any charcoal based products on your teeth. While this natural material may whiten your teeth (there is no scientific evidence of this yet), it is far too abrasive to use on your precious enamel! The gritty material does remove plaque and surface level stain from your teeth, but it can also damage your enamel (the top layer of teeth), and any dental work like fillings, crowns, and veneers. According to the American Dental Association, repeated use of charcoal on your teeth may wear away your enamel and reveal the softer inner layer - dentin, which is more yellow in color, resulting in the opposite effect of whitening. Dentin is also not as strong as enamel which will lead to many additional issues like long term sensitivity and decay (cavities).
