You have about 10,000 taste buds on the surface your tongue. The lifespan of a taste bud is about 2 to 13 days but most are lost at approximately ten days, unless they have experienced an abnormal stimuli such as a burn, scrape or even acid exposure from reflux or the foods we eat.
So, while you’re brushing your teeth, don’t forget to brush your tongue to help exfoliate and regenerate healthy buds!
Be sure to inform your dental team if you notice any variation of color or texture on your tongue that does not resolve on its own within ten days. Changes on your tongue and taste buds can be an indicator of other oral and/or systemic health factors.
That’s why your routine dental check-up and intra-oral screenings are so important. Plus, we always like to keep and touch and we’re always here to help, Bud!
