Don’t Forget Your Tongue!
Posted on 9/5/2022 by Covington Family Dental
Picture of a tongue sticking out of mouth Your tongue is a giant muscle that is comprised of tiny finger-like projections on the surface called
pappilae. This pappilae can trap food, bacteria, and plaque particles between them. This build up can lead to bad breath and is a breeding ground for cavity-causing bacteria.

When it comes to the tongue, it's important to keep things tidy. If you look at your tongue in the mirror and see a white coating, you may benefit from the following methods to help create a clean surface. Try using what you already have at home to freshen that tongue up!

1) Dry bristled toothbrush: take your dry soft bristled toothbrush and start as far back on the tongue (near your
molars) and gently draw the bristles forward and out of your mouth. You may need to repeat this a few
times and then rinse the brush head.

2) Gargle with salt water: mix 1/8 th teaspoon in about 8 oz of warm water, gargle and spit. The salt will help gently exfoliate the tongue and encourage healing as well.

3) At your next dental visit, mention your tongue to your dentist or hygienist and get feedback regarding any
concerns that you have.

We love to see your healthy smile, and that incudes a healthy tongue!
