Even if you have the best habits at home, there are times when only our tools will work. The hygienists at Covington Family Dental are here to help you keep your teeth cavity-free.

Why Do I Need Teeth Cleanings?

The mouth is full of bacteria, which encourages the growth of that yellowish residue that sticks to your teeth, called plaque. Even if you brush and floss twice per day, that alone cannot remove plaque, once it has solidified on the surface of your teeth.

When plaque starts accumulating, it can put you at risk for gum or periodontal disease, which can lead to tooth loss if left untreated.

How Does Teeth Cleaning Work?

Most of our patients come in for routine dental cleanings and exams every six months. Some patients with gum disease may need them more frequently, but you should come and see us for a cleaning at least twice each year. This will help us keep any problems from becoming more serious.

A dental cleaning can last between 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how much plaque buildup you have. Some people, who take care of their teeth, are prone to produce more plaque than others because of genetics. Part of your exam will also include an oral cancer screening. This means we will look in your mouth for any possible irregularities or signs of cancer. Early detection is key in treating any type of cancer.

In general, we perform cleanings in three steps:

Step one is scaling.

During this process, our hygienist uses special dental tools to remove hardened plaque and tartar from the gumline. No toothbrush can remove this at home, not even the electric toothbrushes. We have two options for scaling teeth: manually or with electronic tools, depending on the hygienists’ preference. You will also get the plaque buildup from under the gum’s pockets cleaned out and the pockets measured. This step is the longest part of the cleaning and can take up to 30 minutes.

Step two is polishing.

Once we remove all the plaque buildup, you are ready for polishing. This process is like brushing your teeth at home, and our hygienists use a flavored toothpaste and power brushing tool. We use different sized heads to reach every place of the surface of your teeth and leave them feeling smooth.

Step three is flossing.

Most of the time, we finish by flossing your teeth to make sure there are no food particles or pieces of plaque left behind. We recommend you should floss at home at least once a day for better results. Using a water flosser when possible, is also helpful and can improve or even reverse gum disease.

It is essential you don’t skip your regular dental cleanings. This will not only make your mouth feel extra clean and smooth, but it will also help prevent potentially dangerous diseases. Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in the U.S.

We are here to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy. Dental cleanings are the primary service we offer here at Covington Family Dental.
