Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are solutions for tooth replacement for cosmetic reasons or to replace missing teeth lost from decay. We usually recommend bridges as a replacement option when there are one or more missing teeth.

Our dentists at Covington Family Dental have many years of experience with this procedure and will give you all the details you need to make an informed decision.

How Do Dental Bridges Work?

When you have a gap in between one or more teeth because some pieces are missing, you may want to improve the way your smile looks. Bridges are an excellent choice and relatively inexpensive. You also want to make sure you don’t have gaps that can interfere with proper chewing and biting.

For dental bridges to work, you will need at least two abutment teeth, also known as anchoring teeth, plus a false tooth, or pontic, made of ceramic, porcelain, metal alloys or a combination of these materials. You will also need natural teeth or implants to support the bridge.

Steps to Get a Dental Bridge

Once you decide you are ready for a dental bridge, we will set up an appointment to get started. This process will take at least a couple of visits to our office.
•  First visit. During this appointment, we prepare the abutment teeth by reshaping them and removing part of the enamel so that the crown can fit over the teeth. After we complete this step, we take impressions of your teeth, which the dental lab uses to build the bridge, pontic, and crown. You will likely go home with a temporary bridge that you can wear while the lab builds the permanent one.
•  Second visit. Our dentist removes the temporary bridge before placing your new permanent bridge, and we will make sure it fits properly. You may need to return for more fittings before everything feels comfortable, but in many cases, this second visit is enough.

Advantages of Getting a Dental Bridge

When one or more teeth are missing, the gap causes a number of dental problems. There are several benefits to getting dental bridges, including:
•  Giving you confidence in your smile
•  Allowing you to eat and chew properly
•  Stopping teeth from moving

Dental bridges also allow for your bite to be even. When there’s a gap in your mouth, the teeth on the opposing side don’t have anything to bite on, which can create other problems like shifting teeth and digestion issues from not chewing food all the way.

Bridges are a good alternative that works well when you have some missing teeth, but you need healthy natural teeth or implants to anchor it. If all your teeth are missing the best option is dental implants.

Depending on your situation, you could be a good candidate for dental bridges. If you are interested in improving the way your smile looks so you can be more confident and less self-conscious, let us know, and we will set up an evaluation.
